Dear Partners and Customers-
Putting the bottom-line up-front, I am writing to you today to announce the end-of-life of the GRIDSMART ethernet repeater, effective March 31, 2022.
Beginning April 1, 2022, you will need to use fiber rather than ethernet any time you need to support a camera cable run more than 300 feet. With our industry-first fiber solution, you can support cable runs up to 2000 feet, and you can still use ethernet for short cable runs under 300 feet.
We first introduced the GRIDSMART fiber solution, SMARTMOUNT2025, at INTERSECT in Knoxville way back in October 2019. As we discussed then, and many times since, fiber is the absolute best solution whenever you need a longer cable run that would otherwise require a repeater.
This point proves true in the challenging environments we find in our infrastructure, where space in pull-boxes is often limited and where there are often multiple sources of electromagnetic interference (EMI).
Knowing that this transition would be a learning curve, we took the pains to create and offer a custom toolkit to streamline and ensure proper fiber termination, even in a bucket truck. We also developed our own fiber termination training and certification program.
We had planned a roadshow of in-person INTERSECT Bootcamps throughout 2020 to accelerate the transition to fiber. Unfortunately, those in-person INTERSECT Bootcamps did not happen as planned for reasons we all understand. Nonetheless, we have conducted countless training sessions and certified many installers, including every one of our Cubic ITS FAEs, since early 2020.
The time has come for us to finally kill the repeater.
